House In Berkshire
Located on the outskirts of a village near Cookham the site is occupied by a rather nondescript post war two storey house positioned in the centre of a beautiful oak and silver birch woodland garden. The house is composed of two single storey volumes minimising their impact to the site and also providing balance to the slender silver beech and mature oak trees.
The service/garage entrance to the house is located towards the bottom of the sloping garden, avoiding penetrating the front lawn with a driveway, and so leaving those views from the house free of cars. The house is clad in cedar boarding.
Our strategy was to reposition the house towards the edge of the garden not only to take full advantage of the aspect and orientation but also to afford a new view into the adjoining meadows.
